Thinking of volunteering? Good for you!

Cub being invested

Sometimes it’s as simple as putting on a necker

Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the group – whether they help out as uniformed leaders, look after our hut, or be one of our brilliant trustees. However, as much as volunteering is about giving something back, it’s also about getting something out of it too! Whether that be the feeling of satisfaction, the development of your skills, or meeting new people in our community – you’ll certainly be getting more back than you put in.

We’re proud our volunteers come from all walks of life – from railway workers to builders; to those who work in professional services to teachers and hospital workers – the variety of backgrounds is what makes Scouting special. Whilst there’s no such thing as a typical volunteer, all our volunteers (currently around 30 adults) share a passion for making skills for life a reality for over 100 young people who get involved each week. Also all our volunteers, volunteer with a us on a flexible basis – meaning they help when they can, enabling them to fit Scouting in around their lives.

Wonder what happens next?

At the moment we would love for more people to get involved with our section teams:

Cubs (8 – 10 year olds) – Cub Team Members – helping to run games and activities and come up with brilliant programme ideas! This is a flexible role, meaning you don’t have to be there very week, and would take a couple of hours each week to help plan, prepare, and deliver.

Beavers (6 – 8 year olds) – Beaver Team Members – helping to run games and activities and come up with brilliant programme ideas! This is a flexible role, meaning you don’t have to be there very week, and would take a couple of hours each week to help plan, prepare, and deliver.

Or, if you’re more of a behind the scenes person, we could always do with a hand in the following ways:

Trustee – joining our Trustee Board and supporting our goal of giving as many young people skills for life as possible. There are around 4 to 5 meetings a year, plus a few days spread throughout the year at community events or at the hut.

Admin Support – assisting us in welcoming new volunteers, and ensuring mandatory training is completed by all volunteers; would be a great role for someone who couldn’t commit to a particular evening. Some weeks may require around 20 minutes of help, others may need an hour to go through things with a new volunteer.

More opportunities to be announced soon…

If you want to get involved, or give it a go, please do contact us and we can go from there – we’re bound to be able to fit you in at 1st Lym Valley . If you need any more convincing about the benefits to getting stuck in, the Scouts have some solid facts that might help:

Convinced? Do get in touch and we’ll go from there!

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
