Explorer Scouts (13.5-17)

Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts experience life-changing opportunities and develop important skills by working towards badges and top awards.

Explorer Scouts is the fourth section in the Scout Movement for 13.5 to 18-year-olds. Our Explorers, the Powder Monkeys, are an Explorer Sea Scout Unit, so have a nautical theme to their activities and wear the distinctive blue shirts.

Our young people enjoy the independence of planning their own adventures with their Explorer Unit. It’s the Explorers who are in charge, working in partnership with the leaders to put together the activities they want to do. So far in the past year they’ve done: air rifle shooting, rafting, emergency aid, firelighting, celebrated world festivals, archery, we could go on! They’ve also partnered up with local organisations to have a go at sailing with Lyme Regis Sea School and gig rowing with Lyme Regis Gig Club.

They also have the chance to work towards awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the King’s Scout Award. They can work on their leadership skills by volunteering with a younger section in the Young Leaders’ Scheme if they wish to. Whatever our Explorers choose to do, we support them.

Being an Explorer isn’t just fun, it’s useful as well! Scouting helps to develop the skills for life that makes the difference when applying for university, college or even a job. Scouting helps our Explorers stand apart from the crowd.

We’re independent from 1st Lym Valley – we make our own decisions over the programme, activities, and admissions – but Lym Valley help support us behind the scenes with things like admin.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
